Barrie city council has approved a 50 per cent cut in residential development fees to help promote new housing construction and boost the availability of homes.
The council made this change to the city’s Development Charge By-law during its meeting on Sept. 16. The new lower rates went into effect on Sept. 17 and will be applied retroactively to building permits issued from March 30, 2026, onwards.
Development charges are fees that new developments pay to contribute towards the infrastructure and services needed for growth.
The city stated that the reduced residential charges aim to stimulate fresh residential projects and facilitate the building of more homes in Barrie.
This fee reduction specifically targets residential development charges as part of the city’s strategy to create better conditions for an increased housing supply and diverse options for both current and future residents.
