A man from Whitby is now in custody, facing charges of making threats and hate-related offenses following an investigation into anti-Muslim remarks made online.

The charges were filed four days after Durham Regional Police prevented a threat to attack a synagogue in Whitby, and just three days after shots were fired at a synagogue in Belleville while worshippers were inside observing Yom Kippur.

On Wednesday, investigators from the Durham Regional Police Hate Crime Unit concluded their investigation and arrested Sean Farro, 57. He allegedly spread anti-Muslim hatred on social media using the name ‘Sean Strife’.

Farro has been charged with offenses motivated by hatred-uttering threats and inciting hatred in public.

He will remain in custody until his bail hearing.

If you have any information about this situation, please reach out to the Hate Crime Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5800.

Authorities stated that actions that “target, intimidate, threaten, or instill fear in any individual or group are unacceptable and will be thoroughly investigated.”

Recent changes to the Criminal Code through Canada’s Combatting Hate Act (Bill C-9) have enhanced protections against hate crimes by establishing new offenses related to:
•    Hate-motivated criminal activities
•    Intimidating people from accessing places of worship, schools, community centers, and other locations used by identifiable groups
•    Blocking lawful access to those protected spaces
•    Willfully promoting hatred through the public display of specific terrorism-related and hate symbols

“Hate-motivated conduct remains a serious concern, and when supported by evidence, investigators will work with Crown counsel to determine the appropriate charges and sentencing considerations.”

“DRPS remains committed to protecting the safety, dignity, and well-being of all members of our community.”

You can send anonymous tips to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit www. durhamregionalcrimestoppers. ca. Tipsters might qualify for a cash reward.
