Voters will be casting their votes for the local riding’s next MPP on Sept. 3, after the position was vacated earlier this year by Caroline Mulroney.

York-Simcoe residents are preparing to head to the polls to choose their next member of provincial parliament.

This byelection was called following the resignation of long-serving Progressive Conservative MPP Caroline Mulroney in early June.

Did you know that this is one of three Ontario byelections scheduled for Sept. 3? Voters in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek and Scarborough Southwest will also select their new provincial representatives on that same day.

As we gear up for the York-Simcoe byelection, here are some important facts about the riding:

York-Simcoe includes Bradford West Gwillimbury, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, and King. The population is reported as 124,458 according to the 2021 Census. Out of that number, 103,817 were registered voters during the province’s 2025 general election. The size of York-Simcoe is approximately 1,100 square kilometres.

This time around, candidates include Matt Pearce (Green Party), Naomi Davison (Liberals), Sean Conroy (Libertarian), Dr. David Ghobrial (New Blue), Bobby Nikmard (New Democrats), Gerald Auger (Ontario Party), and Susan Lahey (Progressive Conservatives).

What issues are at stake? Based on recent news stories and conversations with local candidates, topics such as the Bradford Bypass, enhancements to GO Transit train service, Lake Simcoe’s health, cost of living concerns, government fiscal accountability, health care needs, new developments, and farmland preservation appear to be prominent.

The seat has been held by the PC Party since it was created; longtime MPP Julia Munro won it three times between 2007 and 2014. Mulroney claimed victory here in both 2018 and 2022.

During the 2025 general election, Mulroney secured her third consecutive win with 59.4 percent of the vote against Fatima Chaudhry (Liberals), Justin Graham (NDP), Jennifer Baron (Greens), Brent Fellman (New Blue), along with Conroy again, Alana Hollander (Ontario Party) and Franco Colavecchia (Ontario Moderates). The voter turnout stood at 41,831 – which is about 40.29 percent.

If any voters need to reach out to the local election office for assistance or information, it can be found at 140 Holland St. W., Unit 3 in Bradford. They can also be contacted by calling 1-833-505-3413.

There are various ways for voters to cast their ballots. You can apply for a mail-in ballot until Aug. 28 or stop by your local election office before Sept. 2. From Aug. 26 to Aug. 28, advance voting locations will be available for those looking to vote early. On Election Day itself from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m., you’ll need to go to your designated voting location.

You can find more information regarding candidates as well as details about the byelections and voting requirements on the Elections Ontario website.
