The Michigan Department of Transportation is alerting drivers that border crossings between Ontario and Michigan will shut down on Friday morning to honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
Traffic at the Gordie Howe International Bridge, Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, and Ambassador Bridge will be halted before 8:46 a. m., marking the time when the first passenger jet hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
The border at Sault Ste Marie International Bridge and Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia will also temporarily close.
Drivers should prepare for about a half-hour delay from when traffic stops until the crossings reopen.
As flags are raised at the border crossings, Taps will be played.
M-DOT advises cross-border commuters to plan ahead for these closures.
Regular operations will continue after this observance.
