WHITBY, ONT. – The Town of Whitby is now managing its impressive $154.9 million recreation center as it gears up for the grand opening on Sept. 12.
This transfer of management for the town’s biggest recreation project indicates that construction is nearly finished, allowing for commissioning to start, equipment and furnishings to be installed, staff training to take place, and final preparations for operations.
A press release noted that this complex was developed through extensive planning, community involvement, and teamwork to accommodate Whitby’s expanding population.
Situated west of Baldwin Street South and south of Highway 407, this roughly 15,200-square-metre facility will be a hub for recreation, sports activities, and community engagement.
Designed by Perkins + Will Architecture and constructed by Ledcor, it features an aquatic center complete with a 25-metre, 10-lane pool, a separate leisure pool, and a second-floor viewing area-making it home to the largest pool in Durham Region. Additionally, it will house a double gymnasium with a three-lane indoor walking track; a twin-pad arena featuring ice pads sized at 85 feet by 190 feet; plus spaces dedicated to community programs, meetings as well as arts and cultural events.
