UPDATED: Man seriously injured in officer-involved shooting
Ontario’s police oversight agency reports that a 28-year-old man sustained serious injuries after being shot by Kingston Police officers at the Waaban Crossing on Wednesday.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) stated that Kingston Police received a distress call from a man around 9:30 a. m. on Aug. 26. Officers were sent to the Waaban Crossing, where they came across the individual.
“There was an interaction, and two officers discharged their firearms. The man was struck multiple times,” the SIU mentioned in a news release issued late Wednesday afternoon.
The man was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
This information was shared shortly after Kingston Police confirmed that a “police-involved shooting” had taken place on the bridge at approximately 9:40 a. m., leading to the closure of the crossing in both directions.
Authorities indicated there was no ongoing threat to public safety and noted that no officers were hurt.
The Waaban Crossing, which is a 1.2-kilometre bridge connecting Kingston’s east and west sides over the Cataraqui River, remained shut down for most of the day while investigators secured and examined the scene. Police announced that the bridge reopened around midnight Thursday.

Earlier on Wednesday, Kingston Police spokesperson Const. Anthony Colangeli mentioned that the entire bridge had been marked as a crime scene to protect potential evidence.
“To maintain the integrity of that scene, the best thing we can do is close the bridge in both directions,” Colangeli said.
The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic specialists to this case. They recovered two police firearms from the site, along with a gun belonging to the injured man, according to their report.
Colangeli explained earlier that Kingston Police could not provide more details because responsibility for investigating had shifted to the SIU.
“Any further details about the involved parties or incident itself will have to be addressed by the SIU, as they are now overseeing this investigation,” he stated.
The SIU is an independent civilian body tasked with investigating incidents involving police that lead to death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or firearm discharges at individuals.
The SIU is encouraging anyone who may have information, photos or videos related to this incident to reach out to investigators through their agency.
