Environment Canada has issued a yellow alert for severe thunderstorms in the Waterloo region, Guelph, and nearby areas due to anticipated heavy rain and strong winds this Wednesday afternoon.

The warning states that wind gusts may reach as high as 90 km/h and there is also a chance of hail the size of toonies.

These conditions are expected to persist into the early evening.

According to Environment Canada, local power outages could happen along with possible damage to roofs, fences, branches, and temporary shelters.

Residents are advised to stay indoors when thunder is heard since lightning can be dangerous.

Emergency Management Ontario suggests seeking cover immediately if severe weather approaches.
