Experts have confirmed that a tornado struck just north of Wellesley during a significant storm last Wednesday, which moved through southwestern Ontario.

In Tavistock, two tornadoes and a downburst were also validated.

According to a Facebook post from researchers at the Northern Tornadoes Project, the tornado was rated EF1 due to damage observed, such as parts of a barn roof being torn off, damage to crops, and a converted refrigerated trailer being relocated from its original spot.

A brief tornado debris signature was identified on radar.

The NTP blog mentions that the tornado began around 5:30 p. m., traveling east for over six kilometres.

Additionally, two more tornadoes and one downburst were confirmed by the NTP in Tavistock.

One tornado near Shakespeare was rated EF1 and moved southeast. Researchers noted it caused considerable damage to agricultural structures and trees, leaving a clear path through some crops.

The second tornado received an EF0 rating and started west of Tavistock before moving into town.

The downburst damage traveled 17 kilometres and was rated at EF0. A downburst occurs when strong winds descend under a storm causing wind-related damage.

Most tree damage in Wellesley Township resulted from straight-line winds, which the NTP states were part of a larger area of wind damage extending from south of Goderich to Brantford.

The storm led to widespread destruction throughout southwestern Ontario, including flooding issues in Toronto.

“Significant damage” occurred in Wellesley Township according to Mayor Joe Nowak.

“I was told there were five barns that have been destroyed, not totally destroyed.. apparently there were no injuries, no animals were hurt,” Nowak told .

He mentioned that four residents had to leave their homes in a regional housing complex in the Village of Wellesley after a tree fell on their roof.

“I’ve been in touch with the region on that issue and they’ve had at least four residents … that have to be moved to another accommodation, at least temporarily,” Nowak said.

A resident from Waterloo shared with that strong winds came “out of the blue” during the storm.</P

Jack Meilleur lives on Helene Crescent and reported that the wind lasted about ten minutes; it flipped his gazebo over, broke large branches from his backyard tree, and rearranged his outdoor furniture.

(Lauren Kuivenhoven/CBC)<P<Waterloo Regional Police Service says it received sixty-four calls on September 2 related to dangerous conditions caused by this storm including fallen trees or power lines traffic signal outages as well as localized flooding.
