A joint investigation by South Bruce OPP and Saugeen Shores Police Service is currently taking place regarding a serious motor vehicle collision that occurred Saturday afternoon in downtown Port Elgin.
A black pickup truck remained at the closed intersection of Gustavus St. and Goderich St. (Highway 21) for several hours as police examined the area – car parts littered the street, and multiple vehicles parked or driving on Gustavus St. were heavily damaged.
A witness who was shopping nearby reported seeing a man flee from the crash site.
While there’s no confirmed link, a local taxi driver is recovering from a head injury she sustained when a man attempted to steal her cab just around the corner from the crash scene Saturday afternoon.
The victim’s neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous for privacy reasons, stated that the taxi driver, bleeding from her head wound, arrived at their Waterloo St. apartment seeking assistance. She mentioned that she was returning home when the man struck her and ran away after failing to start her vehicle.
The woman was transported to the hospital for treatment. In a social media update at 6:30 p. m. on February 21, Saugeen Shores police announced an “active investigation between the Saugeen Shores Police and the Ontario Provincial Police. There are no concerns for public safety. No further details will be released at this time.” At this stage, any connection remains unclear; however, about an hour later at 7:30 p. m., an OPP West social media post indicated that police had returned to regular patrols and that the increased police presence had concluded south of Port Elgin, specifically between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road. Earlier at 4:44 p. m., OPP West shared that Bruce-Saugeen Townline was closed in that vicinity. They noted there was a significant police presence in the area and advised drivers to seek alternative routes while confirming there was no threat to public safety.
