Major Concerns for Northwestern Ontario Voters Revealed in Survey

The top issue on the minds of voters in Thunder Bay, Ont., and nearby areas as they head into the municipal election is homelessness and encampments.

This information comes from a survey conducted by CBC Thunder Bay regarding municipal election topics in the area.

The survey was made available on Monday.

As of Friday afternoon, over 430 individuals had shared their thoughts through the survey, with 369 completing it fully.

The purpose of the survey is to shape CBC Thunder Bay’s coverage of the municipal elections leading up to Election Day on Oct. 26.

More than 86 percent of respondents reside in Thunder Bay, while three percent live in Sioux Lookout, three percent are from Ignace, and others are from surrounding communities.

<p Participants were asked to identify what they view as the most pressing issue facing their city or region ahead of the upcoming municipal election.

Over half of those who answered indicated that homelessness and encampments were their primary concern.

This was followed by issues related to crime and policing (47 percent), road infrastructure (30 percent), and cost of living (23 percent).

Respondents were also queried about what actions they would take if they were mayor for a day.

A number of participants expressed a desire to provide more resources to police for tackling crime and theft in their neighborhoods, while others suggested transforming vacant buildings and undeveloped natural spaces into affordable housing. Investing more into local economies was another frequent response.

The majority said they intend to vote in this election.

Concerns such as lack of action from city council, dissatisfaction with current candidates, and transportation issues came up among those who said no or were undecided about voting.

The survey can be completed below.
