Barrie Police are addressing comments circulating on social media that claim crime is rising or that the city is unsafe.
They note that statements like “Barrie isn’t safe anymore,” “crime is out of control,” and “Downtown Barrie is dangerous” often emerge following serious incidents reported in the news.
Police acknowledge these incidents are real and affect people, families, and neighborhoods, but emphasize they don’t represent what daily life looks like for most residents.
“For most residents, daily life looks very different from what’s portrayed online. People go to work, take their kids to school, walk their dogs along the waterfront, attend community events, shop, and move through the city without incident or fear,” police said in a news release on Monday. “That doesn’t mean crime doesn’t exist. It does. But what it does mean is that the incidents generating headlines and gaining the most attention aren’t representative of the experiences of most people.”

According to crime analysts at Barrie Police, many serious violent incidents involve individuals who know each other-such as family members or friends-or those engaged in ongoing disputes. They also point out that violence between strangers is quite rare.
Police state that while hearing about violent crimes can raise concerns among residents, understanding how these incidents happen can help clarify actual risks.
In terms of local statistics, police report that in the first five months of 2026, community-reported harm within targeted “hexagon” zones-areas where higher occurrences of harm are noted-has decreased by 33 percent compared to early 2024; city-wide reports indicate an overall drop in harm by 5.4 percent.
Authorities say they remain focused on proactive enforcement in downtown areas through officers and Special Constables as well as initiatives like the Guardian Program aimed at addressing issues before they escalate into calls for service.
They highlight instances such as the June 13-14 Barrie Airshow weekend when thousands enjoyed waterfront activities without any significant criminal reports.
“It was a reminder that while serious incidents will always grab attention, they do not define the day-to-day reality of life in Barrie,” added the news release.
