Recently, at the Oshawa courthouse located on Bond Street West, Durham Regional Police officers were found not guilty of any criminal charges after an investigation into an alleged assault involving criminal defence lawyer Sudine Riley. This incident took place earlier this year when officers questioned why Riley was in an interview room just after the courthouse had closed. Riley claims she was asked to leave and received a trespassing ticket around 5:10 p. m., just minutes after closing time.

An external review by York Regional Police determined that there were no grounds for charging the officers involved. This outcome has led to conversations about how legal professionals are treated within the judicial system. John Struthers, who once served as president of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, criticized the actions of the officers, saying that asking a lawyer to leave shortly after closing was not appropriate.

Although the officers have been exonerated, this incident raises important questions regarding how courthouses operate and what rights legal professionals have in these environments. If you’re curious about broader legal updates, our UL Lawyers Legal Team stays up-to-date with the latest news affecting our community.
