The City of Vaughan has celebrated the completion of the Kirby Road extension while kicking off another important road project aimed at improving traffic flow and connectivity.
The $65-million Kirby Road extension between Bathurst Street and Dufferin Street has been officially finished as the city continues to carry out its council-approved Nine Point Action Plan to Fight Traffic Gridlock.
This new roadway features four lanes, a fresh bridge over East Patterson Creek, multi-use pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, upgraded lighting, improvements at Bathurst and Dufferin streets intersections, and new streetscaping.
“With a total investment of $65 million – including $45 million from the City and $20 million from the federal government, this project showcases what strong partnerships can achieve,” Mayor Steven Del Duca mentioned at a news conference.
The extension will enhance connectivity and help reduce congestion in the expanding community.
At the same time, work has begun on another project outlined in the Nine Point Action Plan, with a groundbreaking held on Aug. 28 for the Bass Pro Mills Drive extension.
This project will extend Bass Pro Mills Drive between Highway 400 and Weston Road, creating a new east-west link for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The city states that this extension will provide an alternative route to alleviate congestion on Rutherford Road and nearby corridors while supporting future growth.
The project will also include facilities for pedestrians, cyclists, and other active transportation users.
“This groundbreaking is such an important step forward,” Del Duca said. “The Bass Pro Mills Drive Extension project was a commitment I made as Mayor right from the start, as part of the Nine Point Action Plan to Fight Traffic Gridlock.”
Ward 3 Coun. Rosanna De Francesca noted that the extension will improve connectivity and lessen congestion in the community.
The Bass Pro Mills Drive extension is expected to be completed by 2030.
