Mark Carney’s advice for Donald Trump’s team
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told the Trump administration to “stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough,” according to the Associated Press. He mentioned that trade discussions could resume once Washington got serious about negotiating. Carney also accused the U. S. of pushing terms that would leave Canadian industries “gradually wound down in Canada and wiped out.” His remarks came after a new wave of criticism from Washington following the collapse of trade talks on Aug. 21. In the meantime, President Donald Trump attempted to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” and mocked Canada on social media. Furthermore, U. S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Canada couldn’t go “tit for tat” with an economy that’s 13 times larger. Separately, U. S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth ridiculed the Canadian military online by sharing a photo of two female cadets, adding the words “this is real” next to a Canadian flag. In response, Carney labeled the post as “beneath their office,” while the Pentagon remarked that it “speaks for itself.” Beyond this, Carney indicated that the U. S. strategy would have turned Canadian industries into subsidiaries of American firms. He also pointed out that Washington sought an “uncompetitive” agreement for key sectors like autos. Moreover, he noted that changes affecting French-language and cultural protections were being pushed by the U. S. “Canada is a sovereign state. We will strike free trade deals with the countries we wish to strike free trade deals,” Carney emphasized. He also mentioned there had been “mutually beneficial” aspects before negotiations fell apart. Meanwhile, Nelson Wiseman, a professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, said Trump’s annexation threats resonate particularly in Quebec. “Quebecers have the most to lose in an apocalyptic scenario where the U. S. absorbs Canada,” he commented. Since then, Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after talks failed. Canada’s counter-tariffs on nearly $20 billion worth of U.
