Bombardier Inc. (Bombardier) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) are excited to share that they have reached an agreement for Bombardier to acquire the assets of MHI Canada Aerospace, Inc. (MHICA), situated in Mississauga, Ontario. Pending regulatory approvals and standard closing conditions, this deal is anticipated to be finalized later this year.
This acquisition allows Bombardier to enhance its aerostructure manufacturing capabilities by adding MHICA’s skilled workforce of around 750 employees, which will bolster its top-tier aircraft programs. The move further solidifies Bombardier’s internal aerostructures expertise, resilience, and independence.
“This agreement marks a significant milestone in Bombardier’s long-term growth strategy by strengthening essential capabilities, enhancing operational resilience, and providing the flexibility needed to meet increasing customer demand,” said David Murray, Executive Vice President, Manufacturing, Supply Chain Execution and Bombardier Operational Excellence (BOE) System at Bombardier. “MHI Canada Aerospace has established a highly respected operation with a talented and experienced team. This acquisition deepens our core manufacturing knowledge while reaffirming our commitment to developing the local workforce through various avenues in component manufacturing and complete aircraft assembly.”
MHI will collaborate closely with Bombardier during the transition period to ensure a smooth process without disrupting aircraft programs. MHI will also offer transitional support for a temporary duration post-closing to facilitate the operational transfer and maintain stability for MHICA’s staff as well as operations in Mississauga.
“We take pride in what our team has accomplished at MHICA and appreciate their vital contributions to these aircraft programs,” said Hiroyuki Koguchi, Executive Vice President, Head of Commercial Aviation Systems at MHI. “Together we’ve built one of Canada’s premier aerostructures manufacturers; this agreement guarantees a bright future for our employees whose skillfulness, commitment, and expertise have been key to MHICA’s achievements.”
“This transaction aligns perfectly with Bombardier’s careful approach to investing in strategic capabilities that cater to our long-term goals. It boosts our manufacturing presence, strengthens our supply chain, and enhances our capacity to address ongoing demand for our aircraft lineup,” added Sandra Hodgkinson, Senior Vice President, Strategy and M&A at Bombardier. “This deal benefits both companies as well as the MHICA employees who will join the Bombardier family while continuing to foster growth within the local aerospace sector.”
The transaction reinforces Bombardier’s standing as one of Canada’s foremost aerospace and defense employers while showcasing its ongoing dedication to investing in Canadian talent and manufacturing excellence. Similarly, MHI remains committed to commercial aerospace and defense sectors while maintaining a substantial presence in Canada through its other business operations.
The terms of the transaction remain confidential between both parties.
