TORONTO — Nicolás Fernández netted his 14th goal of the season for New York City FC on Saturday night, helping the team secure a 1-1 draw against Toronto FC, while Matt Freese made five crucial saves.
NYCFC (7-8-7) hasn’t won in their last five matches.
Only Leo Messi (18) and Petar Musa (16) have scored more goals than Fernández this season in MLS.
Fernández struck first in the 29th minute, moving from a center-right position to his left before firing a low shot between two defenders into the right post from just outside the penalty arc, making it 1-0.
Dániel Sallói came on for Derrick Etienne Jr. in the 55th minute and found the back of the net in the 70th. On a counter-attack, Theo Corbeanu picked up a long ball from Alonso Coello just outside the penalty box’s right edge and sent over a first-touch cross to Sallói for an easy tap-in that equalized at 1-1.
Toronto (5-7-10) is currently unbeaten in their last five games – starting with a home victory over New England on August 15 that ended their 12-game winless run – and they’ve lost only once in eight matches since returning from the World Cup break.
The teams also played to a 1-1 tie on July 31 at Yankee Stadium.
