Investments from the Skills Development Fund will get 400 workers and jobseekers ready for high-demand jobs in skilled trades, agriculture, and long-term care.
AURORA – The Ontario government is stepping up to support worker training and boost the economy in Simcoe and nearby areas with the sixth round of the Skills Development Fund (SDF) Training Stream. By investing over $4.8 million into three training initiatives, Ontario is looking to help 400 underrepresented jobseekers gain access to training that prepares them for fulfilling, high-demand careers in one of the province’s rapidly growing regions. These programs will offer hands-on skills training, work experience, mentorship, and employment assistance aimed at helping workers prepare for jobs in agriculture, long-term care, and skilled trades. This effort ensures that Ontario has a talented workforce ready to remain competitive amid U. S. tariffs.
“Supporting Simcoe and its surrounding communities means ensuring our workers and businesses are equipped to compete successfully, especially with President Trump threatening Canadian jobs with harmful tariffs,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “We won’t let President Trump’s tariffs dictate what happens in Ontario’s future. Through the Skills Development Fund, we’re breaking down barriers by connecting more people with high-demand careers while providing employers with the skilled talent necessary for growth. The best way forward is to build a stronger economy where our workers have the skills they need to thrive; our businesses have access to talent; and our communities can compete on any stage.”
Minister Piccini was accompanied by representatives from Blue Door Support Service, which is set to receive $3,637,864 aimed at helping 200 vulnerable unemployed individuals find their footing in high-demand careers within Simcoe area. Their eight-week program covering York, Durham and Peel Regions will provide participants with essential skills training as well as wraparound supports like hands-on experience as they pursue careers in skilled trades or agriculture while also contributing positively to local workforces.
“The funding from Ontario’s Skills Development Fund supporting Blue Door’s Construct program is crucial for vulnerable jobseekers who face challenges getting employed or are at risk of homelessness,” stated Debbie Schatia, Chief Executive Officer at Blue Door. “This support allows participants both classroom instruction and practical experience along with personalized services such as food aid or transportation so they can overcome obstacles quickly-allowing them soon after weeks-to secure quality trade jobs.”
Through SDF Training Stream Round 6, Ontario government collaborates with two additional organizations that deliver various training opportunities across Simcoe area:
Botree Inc. will receive $813,700 intended for training 125 women along with individuals from underrepresented groups aiming for roles within long-term care settings-like personal support workers-enhancing overall care standards across nursing homes around this region. Participants will be recruited via partnering long-term care facilities ensuring that their education aligns closely with local hiring demands. The Karma Project Community Food Co-Operative Inc. is allocated $417,000 designated toward equipping 75 at-risk youth through engaging technical skill development activities alongside mentorship opportunities geared towards preparing them for agricultural jobs vital within Simcoe’s economy! These new SDF Training Stream Round 6 projects underwent evaluation before being selected based on recommendations issued during an Auditor General’s review conducted in 2025 improving its structure further including:
Monitoring longer-term job outcomes within three-, six-, or twelve-month periods better reflecting success rates plus optimizing overall program tracking. Increasing transparency through required disclosures concerning registered lobbyists/consultants associated along validated entries against Ontario’s Lobbyists Registry. Fortifying project selections through stricter scrutiny involving comprehensive screening processes tied directly toward project evaluations all around their risks involved.
Besides these enhancements recommended by Auditor General-the ministry additionally introduced brand new tools focused solely on managing risks effectively alongside thorough due diligence measures analyzing persons linked directly toward submitted applications aside from just organizational entities themselves.
