The Republican president signed an executive order instructing the Interior Department to change the lake’s name in the US geographic naming service.
However, Mr. Trump can’t compel Canada to adopt his preferred name.
President Donald Trump announced that he is renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America”.
He has been suggesting this name change recently as the US declared it would impose 50% tariffs on 20 billion dollars worth of Canadian goods over the weekend after negotiations between the two countries fell apart.
The president has been poking at Canada since returning to office last year, implying that this neighbor, once considered a close ally, should be treated as the 51st state instead.
This week, Canada responded to Mr. Trump’s tariffs by implementing retaliatory tariffs on 20 billion dollars worth of American products, including steel, dairy items, appliances and agricultural equipment.
Sitting at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office while signing the order, Mr. Trump had a large sign propped behind him showing a map of the Great Lakes.
The map labeled Lake Ontario with big red letters reading “Lake America”.
Beside him was another map stating, “Making The Great Lakes Even Greater.”
This lake is one of several Great Lakes that have borders shared by both the US and Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected this initiative by invoking the lake’s indigenous history and highlighting that its name predates both Canadian Confederation and the US Declaration of Independence.
“Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always,” he stated.
Nova Scotia premier Tim Houston ridiculed Mr. Trump’s move on social media, saying: “We’re into some real foolishness now. It’s Lake Ontario, buddy.”
New York governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat from a state bordering the lake, commented on X about White House’s announcement: “New York won’t be calling it that.”
No single international organization decides names for cross-border bodies of water; hence Mr. Trump has considerable discretion regarding how US government recognizes geographical locations and landmarks.
Ontario premier Doug Ford dismissed any possibility of changing the lake’s name as mere “rhetoric” during his ongoing exchanges with Mr. Trump.
The name Lake Ontario derives from an Indigenous Huron word “oniatari: io,” which translates to “lake of shining waters.”
The province named Ontario was established in 1867 and took its title from this very lake.

Mr. Trump noted that while his action wasn’t meant to convey any specific geopolitical message, “Canada’s been ripping us off for a long time” concerning trade and military matters.
“They wanted to be treated like a state and they’re not a state,” said President Trump.
“We just can’t do that anymore.”
“We love the people of Canada,” added Mr. Trump.
“I don’t think their representatives do an appropriate job. Maybe they’ll change. I really don’t know. It doesn’t make much difference.”
This move reminds many of last year’s attempt by him to rename Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America”.
Mr. Trump scribbled his signature with a Sharpie pen on the executive order before holding it up for cameras while stating: “And we filed all necessary papers, documents-everything else.”
“We’ve notified all various people we have to notify. So we’ve done everything you have to do,” he remarked.

“And this is official; effective immediately.”
The signed executive order indicates changes are expected within 30 days actually occurring shortly thereafter.
He also hinted that his efforts towards renaming bodies of water might not stop here.
“So if you think about it-we’ve got a gulf and we’ve got a lake; now all we need is an ocean,” Mr. Trump suggested.
