Depending on when you attended, fans experienced one of two very different days at the first-ever Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham.
With free admission on Friday to attract newcomers, many eager attendees were met with unfinished facilities, confused staff, lack of directional signs, and unclear communication as delays piled up. While practice and qualifying sessions were supposed to take place throughout the day, not a single car hit the track. Both fans and participants left feeling bewildered and frustrated.

By Saturday morning, however, nearly all signs of Friday’s troubles had disappeared. With rescheduling efforts in place, track activity was steady and sessions flowed seamlessly from dawn till dusk. Surprisingly, Friday’s mishap didn’t deter attendance; tickets were almost sold out, and those who paid seemed to have an amazing time.
Full disclosure: work commitments kept me away from the track on Friday. But after chatting with many who were there that day, I’ve gathered enough insight into what went wrong. Being on-site Saturday and Sunday allowed me to explore every grandstand and general admission spot as well as all off-track facilities like paddock access. After decades attending races at Exhibition Place and covering events across various tracks worldwide, I walked away from the weekend with plenty of observations.

Since Exhibition Place is mainly empty throughout most of year too much infrastructure could be set up ahead of time; closing only Lakeshore Boulevard was straightforward since some catch fencing stayed installed even during offseason use.
