Alvin Tedjo has been chosen as Mississauga’s new mayor, according to projections from the CP24-CTV Election Desk.

With all polls counted, Tedjo seems to have secured 39.2 percent of the votes, totaling 74,479 votes. He outpaced incumbent Carolyn Parrish by over 22,600 votes.

Parrish gathered about 27.3 percent of the vote while former mayor Bonnie Crombie came in third with 22.7 percent.

“Mississauga has voted for change,” Tedjo stated amidst loud applause and cheers from his supporters.

“Today, the people of Mississauga have made a decisive and historic choice for a shift at city hall. My friends, it’s truly an honor of a lifetime to stand here as your next mayor of this great city. I recognize this is a significant responsibility that I take seriously.”

He expressed gratitude toward Parrish for her service and also acknowledged other candidates Bonnie Crombie and Dipika Damerla, noting that it was a “tough” contest.

“Throughout this campaign, we presented a thorough vision for how we would approach things differently and bring about real changes that positively impact people’s lives,” Tedjo explained. “Now we will embark on the challenging task of turning our plan into reality.”

The 41-year-old father of three immigrated to Canada when he was four years old. Tedjo has served on council since 2022.

During his campaign, he pledged to implement a two-year freeze on city-wide residential property taxes concerning the city’s share of the bill. He also promised to increase property tax rebates for seniors and make city programs more affordable and accessible for families.

Crombie was quick to extend her congratulations to Tedjo right after CP24 announced his win.

“I’ve called Alvin Tedjo to congratulate him on his victory and the privilege of becoming our city’s next mayor,” Crombie shared with supporters.

“Alvin, your enthusiasm and energy are important in politics. You’ve motivated people to engage and believe they can influence our city’s future.”

She thanked her family and supporters as well, saying, “serving Mississauga has been the greatest honor of my life.”

Parrish also promptly conceded defeat to Tedjo while congratulating him.

“Not delivering everything people were hoping for during tough times in our economy was my error. We should’ve made our message clearer,” Parrish remarked.

She wished him good luck moving forward.

“He’s going to face some challenges ahead; he can call me anytime if he wants advice on what not to do,” she noted.

She added that “this wasn’t just another election” and mentioned that four more years weren’t in her plans anymore.

“We haven’t had normal circumstances these past two-and-a-half years. These are difficult times we’re experiencing,” Parrish said.
