As of the latest report released Wednesday night by Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES), there are currently 69 active wildfires in northwestern Ontario.

Out of these, seven fires are uncontrolled, three are being contained, 11 are managed, and the remaining fires are under observation.

The province confirmed one new fire in the northwest as of Wednesday evening:

Kenora 32 (KEN032) is situated between Cedar Lake and Ord Lake, about 1 kilometre west of Ord Lake Road. This small fire spans 0.1 hectares and is not under control.

The forest fire risk mostly ranges from low to moderate across northwestern Ontario, with some areas in the southwest corner, including Kenora and Dryden, experiencing high hazard levels.

Noteworthy Fires in the Area

The Rinker Complex: Comprising Thunder Bay 36, Dryden 34, and Dryden 35 – continues to be one of the largest firefighting efforts in this region. Thunder Bay 36 covers an area of 301,240 hectares; Dryden 34 encompasses 45,800 hectares; and Dryden 35 spans over 30,201 hectares. All three fires remain out of control. An evacuation order is still in effect for regions impacted by these fires. Fire activity is currently low, and AFFES noted on Sunday that Fire Ranger crews were making “excellent progress” in putting out hotspots. Atikokan Cluster: Includes Fort Frances fires numbered 13, 14, and 15. These fires measure at sizes of 25,313 hectares, 51,768 hectares, and 42,273 hectares respectively. Fort Frances fire number 13 is now being monitored while fires number 14 and number 15 continue to be uncontrolled. The travel restrictions for Fort Frances fires number 14 and number 15 have been lifted; however, residents returning should keep clear of ongoing firefighting activities. According to an update from AFFES on Monday, more than a hundred firefighters have been assigned to this cluster including personnel from Mexico. It was reported that fire behavior has been minimal due to helpful recent rainfall.

A Tuesday post on the Ontario Forest Fires Facebook page mentioned that a group known as the Highway 599 cluster is now controlled. This cluster consists of Sioux Lookout numbers 84 and 86 along with Sioux Lookout number 89 located southwest of Mishkeegogamang First Nation.

Approximately 702 People Still Displaced

As per information from the Ministry of Emergency Preparedness and Response on Wednesday morning approximately 702 individuals remain displaced because of wildfires within Ontario.

Roughly 2,100 evacuees throughout northwestern Ontario have returned home safely.

The ministry has conducted over 110 coordination calls involving First Nation chiefs along with community leaders as well as emergency management partners alongside municipalities and federal representatives according to Jill Dunlop who serves as Ontario’s minister for emergency preparedness.

Evacuation Alerts Lifted

The evacuation alerts for Fort Frances fire number 39 alongside Minnesota’s “Thumb Fire” have now been rescinded.

“Wildland fire suppression activities are ongoing [for] this fire but public safety relating to this fire is no longer a concern. Residents and visitors should continue to stay aware of local conditions while following any directives issued by local authorities or emergency officials,” states Ontario Forest Fires’ website.

A restricted fire zone covering northwestern Ontario along with part of northeastern areas was officially revoked starting at twelve oh one A. M ET Thursday morning.

Additionally effective at nine A. M Thursday morning the province will lift both implementation orders as well as evacuation orders concerning Thunder Bay numbers 36 & 56 alongside Dryden numbers 34 & 35.

Individuals under evacuation orders must leave their areas immediately while those under alerts should prepare themselves for potential evacuations ahead. Implementation orders indicate travel limitations within specific zones.

Durning a press conference last week where provincial officials discussed updates regarding wildfire situations Ontario’s natural resources minister stated that assessments concerning property damages are beginning now that conditions have improved somewhat with regards to wildfire incidents occurring around Northwestern regions.
