Update on Forest Fires in Northwestern Ontario
The Upsala Fire Department in northwestern Ontario says GlobalMedic put together fire skids for local fire departments, which turn any pickup into a brush truck. The skid contains a 1,000-litre water tank, a self-priming water pump, a suction hose, a nozzle and a length of wildland fire hose. (Upsala Fire Department/Facebook)

Currently, there are 69 wildfires active in northwestern Ontario, based on the latest update released Thursday night from Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES).

Among these, seven fires are not under control, three are being held, 11 are contained, and the rest are being monitored.

As of Thursday evening, a new fire was reported in the northwest:

Thunder Bay 84 (THU084) is situated near the northeast side of Loganberry Lake, about 1 kilometre northwest of Holly Lake. The fire spans 0.2 hectares and is currently under control.

The forest fire danger levels mostly range from low to moderate throughout northwestern Ontario, with some areas experiencing high hazard conditions.

Key Fires in the Area

The Rinker Complex: Comprising Thunder Bay 36, Dryden 34 and Dryden 35 – remains one of the largest firefighting efforts in the area. Thunder Bay 36 covers an area of 301,240 hectares; Dryden 34 spans 45,800 hectares; and Dryden 35 measures at 30,201 hectares. All three fires remain uncontrolled. An evacuation order is still in effect for regions affected by these fires. Fire activity has been relatively low; as noted in Sunday’s update from AFFES, Fire Ranger teams were making “excellent progress” towards putting out hotspots. Atikokan Cluster: This includes Fort Frances fires numbered 13, 14 and 15. These fires cover areas of 25,313 hectares for Fort Frances 13, while Fort Frances 14 covers about 51,768 hectares and Fort Frances 15 reaches up to approximately42 ,273 hectares. Currently listed as observed is Fort Frances 13; however both Fort Frances fires numbered 14 and 15 remain uncontrolled. Travel restrictions for Fort Frances 14 and 15 have been lifted but residents returning to these locations should avoid active firefighting sites. In Monday’s update from AFFES it was mentioned that over a hundred firefighters have been assigned to tackle this cluster including personnel arriving from Mexico. They also highlighted that fire behavior has remained low aided by recent rainfall.

A post shared on Tuesday via the Ontario Forest Fires Facebook page revealed that a set of fires known as the Highway 599 cluster is now under control. This group consists of Sioux Lookout 84 , Sioux Lookout 86 , and Sioux Lookout 89 located southwest of Mishkeegogamang First Nation.

Evacuees Head Back Home

By Friday all wildfire evacuees from these communities had returned home according to Prepared Ontario:

Eabametoong First Nation. Gull Bay First Nation. Lac Des Mille Lacs First Nation. Lac La Croix First Nation.

“Thank you host communities of Fort Frances, Kenora, Niagara Falls and Thunder Bay for helping to #Protect Ontario,” wrote the province on Facebook.

Status on Evacuations

The evacuation alerts previously issued for Fort Frances 39 as well as Minnesota’s “Thumb Fire” have been removed.

“Wildland fire suppression activities are ongoing [for] this fire but public safety regarding this fire is no longer a concern. Residents and visitors should continue to stay aware of local conditions and follow any guidance provided by local authorities or emergency officials,” states Ontario Forest Fires’ website.

A restricted fire zone encompassing parts of northwestern Ontario along with a small section of northeastern regions was officially revoked at exactly12 :01 a. m. ET Thursday morning.

The province will also be lifting implementation orders along with evacuation orders surrounding Thunder Bay numbers 36 and 56 , plus Dryden numbers 34   and35 , effective at9 :00 a. m. Thursday morning.

If you’re under an evacuation order you must leave your area while those receiving evacuation alerts should be prepared to evacuate soon. Implementation orders mean there are travel restrictions within specific zones.

Assessing Property Damage

During a press conference last week where provincial officials discussed updates on wildfires Mike Harris , Minister of Natural Resources stated that with improving conditions they’re starting early assessments regarding property damage across parts of northwest Ontario too.

“My ministry is also conducting assessment flights to document property damage and loss. Impacted property owners can contact211to receive information from our ministry staff along with guidance on next steps,” said Mike Harris.

The ministry continues working closely alongside Namaygoosisagagun First Nation aiming towards restoring access roads leading into their community while ministry engineers focus efforts toward repairing their first bridge quickly too.

The ministry has plans together with camps operators plus tourism stakeholders assisting them return safely so they can evaluate damages according to what Harris added.

Notices regarding Air Missions or NOTAMs still apply specifically around Thunder Bay number  36and Fort Francesnumber  14.

Highways Reopened

According to provincial interactive highway maps road closures affecting Highway527as well as Highway811have now been lifted successfully.

On Wednesday Ontario Provincial Police( OPP ) advised residents traveling through Highway527to expect increased police presence aimed at aiding returning residents back home into Armstrongand Whitesand First Nationfollowing lifting earlier implemented evacuations/restraints there previously enforcedin those locales likewise.

Throughout this season OPP urged everyone out rightlyfor personal safety whilst ensuring emergency responders could work effectively stating:Stay awayfrom affectedregionsdon’tapproachwildfirescenesjustfortakepicturesorvideos.
