A large-scale rescue mission is currently underway in Ontario as teams look for a missing aircraft.

The Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre announced on X on Sunday that the search is taking place in the Kawartha Lakes area of southern Ontario, close to Balsam Lake.

The pilot, David Douglas, was last seen leaving Oshawa Executive Airport around 8:30 a. m. on Friday.

Later that day, Durham Regional Police asked for help from the public, noting that Douglas had intended to return to the airport about an hour later.

“He did not return as expected and has not been located,” a news release issued on behalf of the family stated.

Douglas was flying a light blue and yellow homebuilt aircraft.

The family is urging anyone in the cottage community who may have information that could help locate Douglas to come forward.

“Anyone who heard an aircraft flying unusually low on Friday morning or noticed any changes in engine sound should call 911,” the release mentioned, adding that anyone with video footage from Friday is also encouraged to save it and reach out to 911.

Richard Wiltshire, a cousin of Douglas, told in an interview that the 73-year-old has been flying for many years as a hobby.

“This trip is, my understanding, this trip is quite normal for him to go on a flight,” Wiltshire said. “We want him home, we want him safe with his family again.”

The pilot stands at five-foot-seven and has a slim build. He has black/grey hair and sports a mustache, according to police reports.
