Practice Delayed for INDYCAR Drivers at Markham

MARKHAM, Ontario – The INDYCAR series’ debut in the Toronto suburb of Markham faced delays as construction crews required extra time to finish the track ahead of Sunday’s Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham (noon ET on FOX and FOX One).

The support series was set to take to the 2.19-mile course at 9 a. m. ET Friday, with INDYCAR drivers scheduled for their first laps on the 12-turn layout at 3 p. m.

Unfortunately, neither of those times were met, and after multiple delays, INDYCAR decided to cancel all activities for the day at 5:30 p. m.

“Ensuring driver safety and completing the certification process for competing on a brand-new racetrack caused today’s delays,” said a statement from the track.

With preparations still underway in Markham, teams rushed to get everything ready for Saturday.

To make up for lost time, INDYCAR added a practice session on Saturday at 10 a. m., followed by another practice session at 2:30 p. m., which was originally meant for qualifying, and qualifying will now take place at 6:30 p. m.

“INDYCAR is extremely disappointed that our promoter couldn’t complete the track build on schedule despite ample assistance from our team onsite,” said INDYCAR President J. Douglas Boles in a statement.

“Ontario has always been an amazing market for our sport and today’s turnout is proof of that. New events often come with logistical challenges, and we share in our fans’ frustration while apologizing.”

Drivers were eager to get out on track Friday but understood it would be tight.

“I wouldn’t say I’m nervous or anything like that,” Team Penske driver Scott Mc Laughlin shared with reporters Friday morning. “I’m excited. It looks like an awesome layout.”

“Once it’s done, it’s going to be wicked.”

It became clear when teams arrived Thursday that there could be issues; significant amounts of wall barriers and fencing were still incomplete along with not enough staff or equipment available to ensure everything was inspected by the FIA representative.

The planned track walk was pushed back until Friday morning. Despite notable progress overnight, ongoing safety concerns regarding some walls and tire barriers persisted.
