This week, thousands of municipal representatives are expected to attend the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) annual conference in Ottawa, marking a record turnout.

Local officials plan to urge the province for reliable funding and additional support to address pressing issues like homelessness and aging infrastructure.

The conference brings together leaders from cities, towns, and rural areas for policy sessions and direct meetings with provincial ministers.

Kicking off on Sunday and running through Wednesday, this year’s event takes place at Ottawa’s Rogers Centre. Premier Doug Ford is set to speak to delegates on Monday morning.

This time around, AMO is shining a light on the increasing demands municipalities face in providing services and building necessary infrastructure.

“One thing that we’re always pushing for is long-term infrastructure funding for housing and the economy,” said outgoing AMO president Robin Jones. “We also, at every opportunity, encourage the government and the ministers to fully fund health and social services that are provincial responsibilities.”

Jones mentioned that many costs have been shifted onto municipalities recently, leaving them reliant mostly on their property tax revenue to cover these expenses.

AMO estimates that over $250 billion will be needed for infrastructure investments in the next decade to support growth, address climate change challenges, and maintain old roads, water systems, and other critical assets across Ontario.

Delegates are advocating for more provincial funds specifically allocated for community housing as well as mental health and addiction services; they estimate needing $11 billion over the next 10 years to eliminate chronic homelessness.

This year’s conference falls during an election year, adding a political layer as mayors and councillors seek public support ahead of the October vote.

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe is also scheduled to speak with delegates Monday morning before Ford takes the stage.

Jones will hand over leadership duties to Ottawa Coun. Riley Brockington while also addressing attendees.
