In a concerning event at Gatcombe Circle in Richmond Hill, located near Elgin Mills Road West between Bathurst and Yonge streets, two vehicles were intentionally set on fire during the early morning of July 24, 2026. York Regional Police arrived after receiving reports of a vehicle ablaze around 2:15 a. m. , finding one car fully engulfed in flames and another with its trunk burning. Fire and Emergency Services quickly put out the fire, confirming it was an act of arson.
Luckily, there was no damage to nearby homes, and no injuries were reported. Surveillance cameras captured footage of two suspects fleeing the scene shortly after the fire was started, with one carrying a jerry can. The suspects drove away in a dark-colored sedan. The investigation is still underway, and officials are asking anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage from that area to reach out to the #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau Unit.

Your Rights and Options
In Ontario, victims of arson can report the crime to police and seek compensation for damages through insurance claims. It’s crucial to document all damages and keep track of any communication with law enforcement and insurance companies. According to the Criminal Code of Canada, arson is taken very seriously and can lead to harsh penalties for those responsible, including jail time and fines.
If your property has been harmed, you might also consider civil action against those who caused it in order to recover costs that insurance won’t cover. Consulting with experienced legal professionals can help you understand your options and make sure your rights are upheld.
