The disagreement includes staff transfers, reassignments and layoffs when positions are eliminated.

Ontario’s education unions and the provincial government are still at odds, raising concerns that labor issues might follow students back to school this fall.

Negotiations involving four major unions have come to a standstill over which topics should be dealt with at the provincial level versus those managed by local school boards.

The matter has been taken to the Ontario Labour Relations Board. A ruling could take months, possibly delaying significant negotiations until the school year begins.

This disagreement involves staff transfers, reassignments, and layoffs when jobs are cut. Key issues like salaries and class sizes haven’t been addressed yet.

The unions claim they’re willing to keep discussing non-disputed matters. The province contends that some unions opted to pause negotiations.

Current collective agreements will end at the close of August.

Unions might conduct strike votes after contracts expire, though no strike has been declared yet.

This means families shouldn’t rush into setting up emergency childcare just yet. However, as the first day of school nears, parents, teachers, and education workers will be closely monitoring any developments at the negotiation table.
