Ontario Premier Doug Ford needs to call a byelection in the Scarborough Southwest riding on Wednesday, and he might also call elections for two other districts.
The seat in Scarborough Southwest has been empty since February when Doly Begum stepped down to run for the federal Liberals – a goal she successfully achieved.
A news release from Elections Ontario back in February stated that the latest possible election day for Scarborough Southwest is Sept. 3.
According to the Election Act, elections have to be announced on a Wednesday and held five Thursdays later, which means an election for that riding must be called by Aug. 5.
There are also provincial seats up for grabs in York-Simcoe and Hamilton East-Stoney Creek after Progressive Conservative minister Caroline Mulroney and Neil Lumsden resigned from their respective positions.
Mulroney stepped down in June while Lumsden declared his retirement from politics on Aug. 5.
Ford could choose to announce elections in all three ridings on Wednesday.

Scarborough Southwest
The Ontario NDP has won the Scarborough Southwest seat during the last three provincial elections with Begum as their candidate. Their new challenger, housing advocate Fatima Shaban, is set to compete for her position. This May, Ahsanul Hafiz emerged victorious against former MP Nate Erskine-Smith to become the Ontario Liberal candidate for Scarborough Southwest. According to his campaign website, Hafiz runs several Domino’s Pizza franchises across Ontario and advocates for youth sports. The Ontario Tories are putting forth Dr. Noor Tarun as their candidate for this riding. The family doctor operates multiple clinics in the GTA, according to a news release from the party. Hamilton East-Stoney Creek
Neil Lumsden, MPP for Hamilton East-Stoney Creek and Ontario’s minister of sport, announced his retirement effective Aug. 4 back in July. Following his announcement, three parties within Hamilton East-Stoney Creek revealed their candidates for the upcoming byelection. Jeff Beattie aims to succeed Lumsden as the Ontario Progressive Conservatives’ representative. Currently serving as councillor for Ward 10 in Hamilton, Beattie mentioned through social media that he would withdraw from municipal elections to pursue provincial office instead. Pascale Marchand is running on behalf of the Greens while Heino Doessing was appointed by the Ontario Liberal Party.
