Environment Canada has issued a yellow severe thunderstorm watch for the London area, indicating that conditions may change starting in the afternoon and continuing into the evening.

Risks include wind gusts reaching between 90 to 110 kilometres per hour, local rainfall amounts exceeding 50 millimetres, and hail ranging from quarter to ping pong ball sizes.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain,” said Environment Canada.

The storms will first develop over Lake Huron and then move southeastward. A yellow-band warning from Environment Canada signifies weather that could lead to damage, disruption or health impacts that are moderate, localized and/or short term.

Power outages might occur if the storm passes through. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is also possible. Intense rainfall can result in flash flooding and significantly lower visibility. Large hail poses risks for serious damage and injury.

Emergency management Ontario advises residents to seek shelter immediately if severe weather approaches.

Residents should keep an eye on alerts and forecasts provided by Environment Canada.
