Authorities report that 51 alleged victims have been identified through the investigation known as Project Time, resulting in charges against 63 individuals across Ontario.

Individuals from Richmond Hill, Markham, and Vaughan are included among those charged in a comprehensive investigation into online child exploitation.

Officials from the Provincial Internet Child Exploitation Strategy-a collaborative effort involving the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and 25 other police agencies, including York Regional Police-announced these charges today.

Police indicate that 51 alleged victims were recognized during the investigation.

“As part of Project Time, a coordinated provincial initiative aimed at identifying and capturing those who exploit children, investigators focused on individuals involved in creating, possessing, and sharing child sexual abuse material,” stated the OPP in a release. “Victims were also located and protected, with necessary support offered to those affected.”

According to police, Project Time has resulted in 213 charges being filed and 814 electronic devices being confiscated; 264 criminal investigations have taken place with another 154 ongoing inquiries.

Two of the accused held positions of trust within their communities, while eight others were repeat offenders. However, police did not disclose which suspects fell into these categories.

A man aged 39 from Richmond Hill faces charges for possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material x2.

A 26-year-old man from Vaughan is charged with making child sexual abuse and exploitation material x6.

A man aged 26 from Markham is charged with possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material x2.

Some of those accused cannot be named due to a court-imposed publication ban, according to police.

“Members of the Provincial Internet Child Exploitation Strategy understand that law enforcement alone cannot tackle these crimes,” said the OPP in their statement. Parents, educators, advocacy groups for children, government entities, and tech companies play vital roles in ensuring children’s safety.

“Project Time showcases the commitment and hard work of law enforcement professionals throughout Ontario and Canada to shield children from exploitation,” remarked OPP Det. Staff Sgt. Tara Clark, lead on the Provincial Internet Child Exploitation Strategy. “The outcomes of this operation highlight how collaboration works effectively while demonstrating both strength within our strategy and our unwavering pursuit against those who target vulnerable individuals.”

The partners involved in the Provincial Internet Child Exploitation Strategy have observed a marked increase in reports regarding online child sexual exploitation along with instances of child sexual abuse material over recent years.
