Police are still looking into the incidents where several Pride flagpoles were cut down and damaged at schools in Perth County over the weekend. These acts have sparked strong reactions from both Pride organizations and school officials in the area.

The Ontario Provincial Police in Perth County reported that they received calls about multiple school properties between June 13 and 14, 2026, after discovering damaged flagpoles at various locations including Perth Line 72, Perth Road 131, Perth Line 43, and Perth Road 135. Authorities are currently searching for two male suspects seen wearing all black with face coverings, who were spotted carrying a saw while riding an ATV nearby.

Stratford-Perth Pride emphasizes that this issue goes beyond just property damage. In a public statement, the organization explained that Pride flags often serve as one of the few visible signs indicating to young people that they can feel safe and accepted within their schools and communities.

The group noted that when such symbols are attacked, “young people understand the message immediately,” which also impacts parents, teachers, and individuals from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community who have experienced harassment or questioned their sense of belonging. Stratford-Perth Pride mentioned that these incidents coincide with Pride Month and follow similar actions in other parts of Southwestern Ontario. While police will manage the investigation, there’s a broader concern about the environment that permits these behaviors.

Huron County Pride has also voiced its concerns, labeling these acts as targeted and motivated by hate. In their statement, they remarked that displaying the Pride flag signifies “safer, accepting and inclusive spaces” and serves as a reminder that “everyone belongs in a community.”

The Avon Maitland District School Board condemned this vandalism as a hateful act aimed directly at specific groups. They pointed out that the affected flagpoles displayed both Canadian and Pride flags. This incident has compelled schools to reallocate resources away from classrooms. Officials stated they are cooperating with police by providing video evidence for their investigation.

Despite this vandalism, both the school board and advocacy groups have assured that new flags will be put up to continue supporting students while maintaining focus on keeping schools safe and inclusive environments.

Police encourage anyone with information to get in touch with Perth County OPP.
