Smoke from wildfires continues to blanket Durham Region and much of southern Ontario on Thursday.

As of 10:30 a. m. Thursday, Environment Canada’s website indicated that the Air Quality Health Index in Oshawa was at “Very High Risk,” measuring 10+.

The weather agency predicts a slight improvement in conditions on Thursday, but air quality will remain in the “High Risk” zone before dropping to “Moderate Risk” on Friday.

You can find more information here.

Durham is still under an orange air quality warning due to smoke from fires in northern Ontario, which is resulting in very poor air quality and reduced visibility.

The warning suggests that conditions might improve by Friday morning, but for now, heavy smoke could affect everyone’s health, regardless of age or existing health issues.

Environment Canada advises limiting outdoor time and rescheduling or canceling outdoor sports and activities.

Mild symptoms may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, along with headaches or a mild cough. More severe symptoms are less common but can include wheezing, chest pain, or a severe cough.

If you’re indoors, it’s best to keep your windows shut unless there’s extreme heat; then you should focus on staying cool.

If you need to go outside, consider wearing a respirator mask to lessen your exposure to fine particles in the smoke.
