President Donald Trump announced a fresh deal with Denmark on Friday, claiming it gives the United States “permanent control over security” in Greenland, a territory he has hinted could be taken by force in the past.

“I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U. S. concerns,” the president shared in a post on Truth Social.

Trump has previously unsettled Europe with requests for the U. S. to take charge of the territory, which is a semiautonomous area of NATO member Denmark, occasionally threatening military action and promising to gain control “one way or the other.” Those threats led to warnings that such an action could potentially undermine the U. S.-led NATO alliance.

The leader argued that controlling Greenland is essential to prevent Russia and China from increasing their influence in this Arctic region, a claim Beijing dismissed as “an excuse” for his own territorial ambitions.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen indicated on Friday that under this new arrangement, the island will remain part of Denmark-falling short of Trump’s earlier demands. She stated that the agreement respects Danish “sovereignty and territorial integrity” as well as recognizing Greenlanders’ “right to self-determination.”

While the complete text of the agreement hasn’t been made public yet, a State Department official told NBC News that it specifically prohibits any non-NATO base or troop presence in Greenland. It also includes measures meant to prevent investments from Russia and China and bans them-as well as other adversaries-from making investments in Greenland that could pose risks to U. S. interests.

Trump referred to it as an “Infinite Life agreement” and asserted it would come at “NO COST” to America.

He also mentioned that his administration will collaborate with Greenland to promptly start developing a “large Military presence in appropriate parts of Greenland, where there are many options.”

The U. S. already maintains a military base on Greenland and has rights to expand its presence there through agreements established back in 1951.

The American military footprint on Greenland has significantly diminished since peak Cold War times when crucial missile early-warning systems were set up there. During Trump’s first term, what used to be a U. S. Air Force base was handed over to create Space Force and was re-designated as Pituffik Space Base.

Denmark stated that this agreement is expected to be signed by representatives from Denmark, Greenland, and the U. S. next week during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

Frederiksen described this deal as “an agreement that strengthens our common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic area and is therefore also good for NATO and Europe.”

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, chairman of the Greenland government, remarked that this deal is “to the benefit of us all.”

“It is gratifying that we are about to enter into an agreement that ensures and strengthens the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and the Western alliance. The agreement recognizes Greenland’s interests and our place in international cooperation,” Nielsen wrote.

“Greenland will forever be part of the strategic defense area of North America and exclude any adversary from it and surrounding areas,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement. “This deal permanently addresses our national security concerns regarding Greenland.”

A State Department official informed NBC News that this agreement will stay fully effective “forever,” even if “Greenland becomes a fully independent country” from Denmark.

“The agreement explicitly guaranteesthe United Statescomplete abilityto do whatit deems necessaryin*Greenland* *in order* *to* secure *and defend* *the* American continent including permanent access basing & overflight rights,” said **official**. “This **agreement** ensures necessary **U S military** presence **in** *(Greenland)* permanently allowing US military increase number bases *(in)* *(Greenland)* required.”*
