This fall, thousands will join together in 30 communities throughout Ontario for the Kidney Walk, all focused on enhancing the lives of Canadians impacted by kidney disease. Whether walking to support someone with kidney disease, celebrating a transplant, remembering a loved one, or meeting others facing similar challenges, participants are working to create a stronger kidney community while raising essential funds for The Kidney Foundation. “The Kidney Walk is so much more than a fundraiser,” said Mary-Pat Shaw, president of The Kidney Foundation’s Ontario Branch. “It’s an opportunity for those living with kidney disease, their families, caregivers, donors, transplant recipients and healthcare professionals to come together. The sense of community and connection experienced at the events is truly inspiring.” Over the past three years, participants in the Kidney Walk across Ontario have collectively raised over a million dollars each year to support The Kidney Foundation’s mission. “We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our supporters,” added Shaw. “Their commitment has allowed us to fund innovative kidney research and provide programs and services that assist Canadians in navigating the challenges of kidney disease. We hope to reach the $1-million milestone once again this year.” More than four million Canadians deal with kidney disease-a serious chronic condition that often shows few symptoms until it advances significantly. For those experiencing kidney failure, treatments may involve life-sustaining dialysis multiple times a week or require a kidney transplant. While transplantation can lead to better outcomes, it isn’t a cure and necessitates lifelong medical care. The effects of kidney disease go beyond just physical health issues. Many individuals and families encounter considerable emotional and financial difficulties along their journey. Funds collected through the Kidney Walk help the Foundation further world-class kidney research while providing peer support and trusted information through educational materials, webinars and websites like the Kidney Community Kitchen. “We are committed to supporting people at every stage of their kidney journey,” says Shaw. “From diagnosis through treatment, transplantation and ongoing support-we want Canadians affected by kidney disease to know they’re not alone.” Participants can also earn chances to win travel prizes courtesy of West Jet.
