Researchers have verified that two weak tornadoes caused damage during thunderstorms in the Kingston, Ont., area last week.

The first tornado appeared early on the afternoon of June 30, according to experts from the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) in a social media update on Sunday afternoon.

This twister created a path of about 18 kilometers and affected farms and trees near Verona, Harrowsmith, and Hartington, said NTP specialists.

It had an estimated peak wind speed of 150 km/h and was rated as an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which is the second-lowest severity classification.

John and Brenda Lesperance were inside their farmhouse when a wind storm ripped off the roof of their over 150-year-old barn. Cameron Mahler reports.

The second tornado damaged trees along a path measuring 10.9 kilometers from Kingston’s Silvers Corners area to Canadian Forces Base Kingston, according to the NTP.

This one was classified as an EF-0 tornado with an estimated maximum wind speed of 115 km/h.

No injuries were reported from either tornado, stated the NTP.

Last Tuesday, Environment Canada issued a red-level tornado warning for the Kingston area-the highest alert on its color-coded weather system.

The thunderstorm also resulted in flooding in Kingston and downed trees mainly in the northern and eastern parts of the city. Transit operations were briefly halted as well.
