Support Dips When Considering Overall Costs
When informed that the total expenditure for the submarine program-including maintenance over many years-could hit $100 billion, public sentiment shifts towards division.
Almost half (48%) believe this program would be a smart investment for public funds while 36% see it as a poor use. An additional 16% remain uncertain.
The findings indicate that Canadians can differentiate between the strategic necessity for enhancing Canada’s submarine fleet and their views on its long-term financial viability.
Older Canadians continue to hold positive views-with 53% aged 60 and above considering it a wise expenditure. Among those aged between 18 and 29, opinions are nearly split: with only slightly more (46%) saying it’s a good use versus (45%) who disagree.
The gender disparity remains evident too; a majority of men (56%) think this program would be beneficial for public spending compared to just41 %of women who share this view.
Liberal voters are most convinced about its worthiness-62 %considering it as good value for public funds. Conservative respondents display divided opinions:45 %think it’s good use while42 %believe otherwise. NDP supporters show greater skepticism with34 %considering it beneficial versus49 %seeing it as detrimental.
Canadians Prefer European Options or Best Deals Over U. S. Purchases
When asked where Canada should source major military equipment from,38 %suggest buying from European allies while an almost equal37 %prefer selecting whichever supplier offers superior equipment at competitive prices.
A mere13 %advocate for procuring military gear from the United States;12 %remain unsure about their choice.
“The results suggest there is a fairly broad public constituency for strengthening Canada’s military capacity , including through what would be an unprecedented investment in new submarines.”
“But support for decision making is stronger than confidence regarding long-term value. Once Canadians consider possible $100 billion lifecycle costs , debate becomes far more contested.”
“It’s striking how few people instinctively lean towards purchasing military equipment from United States. Rather we find near-even splits between preferring supplies via Europe versus opting simply based upon best available goods at affordable prices.”
