Smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario continues to cover the London area for a second day. This has led event organizers to cut short Wednesday night’s Rock the Park concert, while the City of London has paused outdoor recreational programs.

Environment Canada issued an orange-level air quality warning Thursday morning, indicating that wildfire smoke is causing poor air quality and lower visibility throughout London, Parkhill, and eastern Middlesex County.

As of early Thursday morning, Air Quality Ontario assessed London’s Air Quality Health Index at 10+, which indicates very high risk, with conditions expected to only slightly improve to a high-risk level later in the day.

“During heavy smoke conditions, everyone’s health is at risk regardless of their age or health status,” Environment Canada said.

The agency advises people to limit outdoor activities, postpone sports and events outside, and keep windows and doors closed whenever possible.

Rock the Park Cancelled Before Headliners Took Stage

The smoky weather arrived in southwestern Ontario on Wednesday morning as a multi-day heat warning remained active.

By Wednesday evening, Rock the Park organizers announced that they were ending the concert early after receiving advice from the City of London regarding worsening air quality.

The Lumineers were scheduled to headline the first night of this four-day music festival at Harris Park.

“As the impact and risk from the nearby forest fires and increasing smoke conditions continue to rise, both our team and The Lumineers have made the difficult decision to conclude the festival following Dylan Gossett’s performance,” stated festival organizers on social media.

Rock the Park emphasized that everyone’s safety is their top priority, and they will contact concert-goers directly about their tickets.

It’s uncertain whether events will proceed on Thursday.

Cancellations for Outdoor Programs and Spaces

The city has also cancelled outdoor recreation programs along with sports amenities until further notice.

The following programs, activities, and facilities are cancelled:

City-operated soccer fields, baseball diamonds, cricket pitches along with their rental amenities. Outdoor pools and wading pools. Storybook Gardens. Roller Skating at Rotary Square. Rhythm Kickboxing on Dundas Place,

The city mentioned that those affected by these cancellations would be notified directly.

City of London community centres remain open as places for indoor relief for residents. Details about locations and hours can be found here.

Poor air quality has prompted several calls to 911 regarding potential fires in London; however, residents are encouraged not to call unless there’s actual smoke or flames present.
“It did move in quite quickly so I think it caught people by surprise,” said platoon chief Colin Shewell.
“If you see smoke and flame and are truly concerned, definitely call 911. But maybe take a few extra seconds before calling about general information regarding smoke when you’re unsure where it’s coming from.”

Heat Combined with Smoke Raises Health Concerns

Dr. Anna Gunz, an emergency physician at London Health Sciences Centre specializing in climate-related health issues stated that wildfire smoke alongside extreme heat adds additional strain on heart health as well as lung function.

“When we have extreme heat we know that air quality will worsen,” she remarked.

“Both elements together can amplify negative health impacts.”

Dangers are heightened particularly for children elderly individuals pregnant individuals asthmatic patients or others suffering respiratory ailments along with those having heart complications.A thick layer of smoke cast a yellowish hue over London on Jul 15th 2026.(Alessio Donnini/)

Avoiding vigorous outdoor exercise using top-notch furnace filters or portable HEPA filters whenever feasible seeking out public spaces equipped with AC if homes become excessively warm comes highly recommended according to her guidance.

If residents lack AC access maintaining comfort becomes tricky especially keeping out harmful smoke while trying not overheating

“It becomes a trade-off” she noted

This Thursday’s temperature could peak around 28 C accompanied by a chance of showers estimated at around thirty percent

A forecast suggests dispersion effects might take place around noon Friday according Environment Canada
