There won’t be a screening of Wednesday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal match at the Kitchener Market.
The Downtown Kitchener BIA announced that it is canceling the outdoor showing of the match due to poor air quality in the Waterloo region, with no indoor alternative available.
“Due to the fire at the Kitchener Market a few days ago, the indoor screening will also be unavailable. No games will be shown at the market today,” said Arnold Yescas, arts and culture manager with the BIA, in an email to.
A fire at a vendor stall on Sunday led to the closure of Kitchener Market this week. City staff are currently focused on cleanup and developing a plan for hopefully reopening it this weekend.
Argentina will play against England at 3 p. m. RY. Other groups are being forced to adjust due to air quality issues in the area.
Cambridge’s Gaslight District mentioned that people can still watch the game on their big screen, but Tapestry Hall will have an indoor option available.
Guelph Soccer shared on social media that all programming is canceled for Wednesday, and Waterloo United Soccer Club is also halting all practices because of air quality concerns. The group stated it’s reviewing whether any games will go ahead Wednesday night.
A large part of southwestern Ontario is under an orange-level air quality warning due to smoke from wildfires in northern parts of the province.
Environment and Climate Change Canada indicated that poor air quality could last until Thursday, with conditions expected to improve by Friday morning.
The national weather agency advises people to limit outdoor activities as much as possible.
“Keep windows, doors closed as much as possible and if you must spend time outdoors, wear a respirator type mask,” Henry Fung, an operational meteorologist with Environment Canada, told.
Other FIFA World Cup watch parties, including those at FIFA Fan Festival in Toronto, have been canceled too.
