According to Halton Regional Police, a suspected hydro transformer fire caused damage to 11 vehicles in the north parking lot of the Oakville GO Station on Tuesday around 4:05 p. m.
No injuries were reported.
Both police and Oakville Fire responded to the incident, and photos of charred and scorched cars behind yellow police tape circulated on social media.
“(There were) reports of a hydro transformer arcing in the north parking lot, which is suspected to have caused unoccupied motor vehicles parked nearby to catch fire,” said a spokesperson for Halton police.
“In total, 11 vehicles were damaged in the fire. All of them were unoccupied and there were no injuries.”
Arcing refers to a high-energy electrical discharge that can happen due to insulation failure, contamination, or electrical stress inside transformers.

Two cars drove away; nine needed towing
Police mentioned that two of the vehicles could be driven from the scene while the other nine sustained damage severe enough that they needed to be towed. An Instagram user named ‘Campandcity’ shared their thoughts about what happened on social media. “Just to clarify: I don’t know what caused the fire. My car was in that same lane so a police escorted me (to) my car and I was in a state of shock. I have been parking at GO (for the) last 11 years and watching this happen to cars in the same lane as me scared me. The police stated that there’s nothing suspicious about this fire. <p“ There was a fire-related incident that occurred at the Oakville GO Station on July 14. Several vehicles were damaged. Oakville Hydro is investigating,” said an Oakville Hydro spokesperson. A Metrolinx representative added: “On Tuesday afternoon, a fire occurred within the north parking lot of Oakville GO. No injuries were reported.
