Durham Regional Police are searching for a suspect related to a reported “violent” sexual assault that occurred in a Whitby park on Monday night.

As per police reports, officers responded to Iroquois Beach Park, located near Gordon Street and the Waterfront Trail, following notifications about the assault of a woman.

The victim was walking along the beach after leaving the park when it’s alleged that the suspect pulled her off the path into a wooded area, where he threatened and sexually assaulted her.

She managed to escape to a nearby street and signaled for help from a passing motorist who contacted law enforcement. The victim was then taken to the hospital.

Authorities stated that the suspect fled before officers arrived. A search operation using K9 units and drone surveillance was conducted, but he successfully avoided capture.

Police have released a description of the suspect. He is described as a Black man with shoulder-length cornrow-style hair, last seen wearing all-black attire.

Authorities are encouraging anyone with cellphone, dashcam or surveillance footage or any information about this incident to reach out to D/Cst. Jiggins of the Special Victims Unit at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5312.

Anonymous tips can also be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online.

Police mentioned that tipsters “may be eligible for a cash reward” in return for information.

If you or someone you know is facing challenges due to sexual assault or trauma, there are resources available for individuals in crisis:
