Thomas Carnell Ruttger, 33, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 17, 2026, at his home in Hamilton, Ontario. His unexpected passing has left our family heartbroken, and we find some comfort knowing he felt no pain or suffering.
Born on April 29, 1993, in St. Thomas, Ontario, Tom-affectionately known as Tommy to many-grew up in Burlington, Ontario. He was a generous, smart, fun-loving, loyal, and kind person.
Tom is survived by his caring mother, Jane Ruttger (Brad Coon); his dedicated sister, Alli Ruttger (Vaughan Swart); and his cherished girlfriend, Holly Molaski. He also leaves behind his beloved grandmother, Sylvia Dougan; uncles Steve Carnell (Pauline Teape-Carnell), Chris Carnell (Raquel Carnell), and Pete Dougan; along with cousins Elysia Laprise (Ryan Laprise) and Shandel Bourgeois (Chris Bourgeois). Tom will be greatly missed by close family friends Jamie Hayden and Lesley Thomson as well as his tight-knit group of loyal friends.
Tom is now reunited with his dear father, Klaus Ruttger. The bond between Tom and his father was strong. They shared interests in sports, music, and food while being alike in their curiosity about life and their sense of humor. Klaus loved his son deeply and helped nurture Tom’s empathetic nature. Tom is also fondly remembered alongside his Oma Rosemarie Erdt and Opa Werner Erdt-Klaus’ parents.
It’s hard to sum up Tom’s life and the impact he had on those around him. He knew how to make people feel loved and valued. He listened closely to others’ thoughts while responding with care; he laughed easily and stood up for those who needed support. Being around Tom meant enjoying a light-hearted atmosphere filled with fun and possibility. His lively personality was contagious; he often showered others with compliments and gratitude. To his mother, Tom will always be remembered as a loving son who brought joy into her life; to his sister Alli, he’ll forever be seen as a best friend who made her laugh until it hurt.
We recognize the tremendous loss of Tom’s passing; this awareness highlights just how much love we shared with him-and how much he loved us back. For everyone missing him now: may your grief remind you of the love you had for Tom-and the love he returned to you throughout your time together. With time may this sorrow ease so that the warmth of your memories can shine through again. We know you’ll carry Tom in your hearts forever; those big bear hugs will always leave a lasting impression.
Join us as we celebrate Tom’s life on Sunday July 12th 2026 from 6:30 p. m. to 9:30 p. m. at Nickel Brook Brewing Co. in Burlington (3426 Mainway). Everyone who loved Tom or wants to support our family is welcome to attend.
