Peel Regional Police have recovered almost $1 million in stolen goods and arrested a man following a break-in at Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga earlier this year.

On April 30, a masked individual used tools to force entry into Holt Renfrew at the shopping centre just after midnight, taking luxury jewelry and clothing from several displays before fleeing, police stated during a news conference on Friday.

The suspect then took an unattended vehicle that had been left running nearby, according to police. The vehicle was found the next day, Peel police reported.

After thorough video reviews and other investigative efforts, officers identified a suspect and carried out a search warrant at a residence in Mississauga, where they recovered a large quantity of stolen items, as per Deputy Chief Marc Andrews from Peel Police.

The total value of the items recovered is estimated to be nearly $1 million, according to law enforcement officials.

Police indicate that the suspect acted alone.

A 41-year-old man from Mississauga faces charges including possession of break-in tools, disguise with intent, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, failing to comply with a release order, and breach of probation.

He has been held in custody while awaiting a bail hearing.

Officers are working on identifying more victims and determining if the suspect is linked to other retail thefts.

Square One Shopping Centre stated it has collaborated closely with Peel police to address organized retail crime through an on-site police community substation, security personnel, and advanced surveillance systems.

“Together, we’re reinforcing a shared commitment to the safety of our retailers, employees, and the millions who visit Square One each year while sending a clear message that organized retail crime has no place in our community,” Stephen Gascoine, the mall’s director and general manager said in a news release.

The investigation is still ongoing.
