A woman has been saved by the Ottawa police tactical unit after being held against her will in Kanata for over 14 hours, the force reported late Thursday night.

Ottawa police were alerted Thursday morning by a woman concerned for the safety of another woman who was believed to be held inside a home on Finlayson Crescent, according to a news release from the force.

Officers arrived and established a security perimeter around the house while “negotiators worked to peacefully resolve the situation,” and later, at 9 p. m., the tactical unit entered the home to rescue her.

The woman was found physically unharmed and is now receiving support, as stated by the police.

A male suspect, whose age hasn’t been disclosed, was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with injuries that authorities say are not life-threatening.

“The investigation remains ongoing and charges are pending. Additional information will be released as it becomes available,” stated the police force.

During the incident, at least one police firearm was discharged, which automatically triggers an investigation by Ontario’s police watchdog.

The Special Investigations Unit looks into deaths, serious injuries, and allegations of sexual assault involving police officers as well as firearm discharges by police to determine if any criminal charges should be filed or not.
