A 38-year-old paddleboarder has died after seemingly being caught in severe winds and heavy rain on Lake Simcoe this Canada Day.

According to South Simcoe Police, they received a distress call just after 5 p. m. regarding a man in trouble on the lake close to Innisfil.

“At the time of the incident, weather conditions had deteriorated rapidly, with heavy rain and strong winds creating hazardous conditions on the water. There was concern that the male had become stranded and was unable to safely return to shore,” police said in a statement.

The Marine Unit from South Simcoe Police, along with the York Regional Police Marine Unit and the York Regional Police Helicopter, launched an extensive search of the area, during which they found the paddleboard.

Investigators reported that around 8 p. m., they located the man’s body in the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s name is not being disclosed.

Authorities state that while they are still looking into what happened, it’s noted that he wasn’t wearing a life jacket at that time.
