1927 – 2026
With great sadness, the family of Aldo Mascarin shares the news of his peaceful passing at Southbridge Pinewood on Monday, June 22, 2026, at the age of 99, surrounded by his loved ones.
Aldo was born on May 30, 1927, in Azzano Decimo, Italy. He moved to Fort William in 1949 when he was just twenty-two years old. During his time in ESL (English as a second language), he met Amelia Minoletti, and they married in 1953. Together they raised six children. Aldo became well-known in Thunder Bay for his incredible skills in bricklaying and masonry. He took immense pride in his vegetable garden and was featured several times in the Chronicle Journal for his outstanding tomatoes and pears.
He participated actively in various organizations including The Principe di Piemonte Society, the Northwestern Ontario Aviation Heritage Centre, and the National Association of Alpini. Aldo was proud to have founded the Alpini Choir back in 1972 and also volunteered with Roots to Harvest on Lillie Street.
Aldo is survived by his children: Lydia Mascarin, Rob (Kerri), Tina (Steve) Lewandowski, Leana (Ron) Wakewich, Sandra Mascarin and Denis (Cathy). He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His wife Amelia passed away in 2024.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Janhunen for providing excellent care while Dad lived at Southbridge Pinewood. A big thank you goes out to all the staff who took wonderful care of our father.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral service held. A private family interment will occur later on. Instead of flowers, donations to Roots to Harvest would be greatly appreciated.
