Brampton is set to host another protest during a weekend filled with demonstrations across Ontario, as a petition criticizes various decisions made by Premier Doug Ford’s government, from the Greenbelt scandal to the Ontario Place situation, speed cameras, education policies, transparency issues, and more.

This Saturday will see more “Fight Ford” protests that have been ongoing for months throughout the province, including an event outside Brampton City Hall.

The protests represent a continuous effort of activism against Premier Doug Ford and the Ontario PC Party. Organizers have put together a petition that highlights what they describe as the government’s “increased centralization of provincial decision making, reduced public participation, and weakened independent oversight in planning, environmental protection, transparency, education governance, and community decision making.”

The petition outlines concerns like recent reforms to conservation authorities, modifications to the Endangered Species Act, plans for Billy Bishop Airport, the Greenbelt scandal and changes regarding the Ontario Science Centre redevelopment among many other topics.

A protest last month focused on how all of Brampton’s MPPs voted against Bill 113 – legislation proposed by the NDP that received support from Liberals and Greens which would have cut part of the harmonized sales tax on certain food items and non-alcoholic drinks.

Brampton-Centre MPP Charmaine Williams, Brampton-West MPP Amarjot Sandhu, Brampton-North MPP Graham Mc Gregor and Brampton-East MPP Hardeep Singh Grewal all opposed the bill along with the entire PC caucus – a decision described as “shameful” by NDP leader Marit Stiles.

Demonstrations also took place in Brampton back in March and April. Concerns raised included eliminating rent control for new unit constructions since 2018, recent alterations to OSAP that shift more towards loans rather than grants, a province-wide ban on automated speed enforcement cameras and underfunding in healthcare.

Many protesters are expected to join this weekend’s demonstration in Brampton alongside numerous events happening across Ontario. The protest is slated to begin at 9 a. m. For further details about these events or to view the petition click here.
