Hospital staff across midwestern and southwestern Ontario will get practical training on managing challenging paediatric emergencies, thanks to a recent donation.

The Children’s Health Foundation announced on Wednesday that the Paediatric Regional Outreach Program (PROP), provided by Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre, is set to expand to 33 hospitals in the province. This includes healthcare centers in Stratford, Leamington, Woodstock, and even Thunder Bay.

With PROP, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers will engage in realistic simulations within their own clinical settings for complicated situations like status epilepticus – a critical seizure emergency.

“We bring everything needed to recreate real emergencies, often using the hospital’s own equipment,” said Dr. Gurinder Sangha, paediatric emergency physician and simulation program lead at Children’s Hospital. “That approach allows teams to practice in the exact environment where real patients will arrive – making the learning more realistic, and more effective.”

The RBC Foundation provided the funding necessary to deliver this specialized paediatric training to regional hospitals at no additional cost.

“Community hospitals are often the first point of care,” said Sangha. “We want teams to feel confident and prepared when it matters most.”
