Healthcare staff in hospitals across midwestern and southwestern Ontario are set to get practical training on managing complex paediatric emergencies, thanks to a recent contribution.

The Children’s Health Foundation announced on Wednesday that the Paediatric Regional Outreach Program (PROP), offered through Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre, is expanding its reach to include 33 hospitals throughout the province. This includes healthcare facilities in Stratford, Leamington, Woodstock, and as far as Thunder Bay.

With PROP, doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals will engage in realistic simulations within their own clinical settings for challenging situations like status epilepticus – a serious seizure emergency.

“We bring everything needed to recreate real emergencies, often using the hospital’s own equipment,” said Dr. Gurinder Sangha, paediatric emergency physician and simulation program lead at Children’s Hospital. “That approach allows teams to practice in the exact environment where real patients will arrive – making the learning more realistic, and more effective.”

The RBC Foundation provided the funding necessary to deliver this specialized paediatric training to regional hospitals at no extra cost.

“Community hospitals are often the first point of care,” said Sangha. “We want teams to feel confident and prepared when it matters most.”
