A well-known Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) program in Windsor has received a portion of funding from Queens Park as a birthday gift.

Life After Fifty was the venue for the provincial announcement on Friday, which included $22.8 million directed to SALC programs throughout Ontario.

“I am so pleased to celebrate this at Life After Fifty in Windsor,” said Ontario Minister of Seniors and Accessibility Raymond Cho. “In many ways, the concept of Seniors Active Living Centres all got started here.”

The program, which operates at two locations in Windsor, is one of the first SALCs established in the province back in 1966.

“For 60 years, Life After Fifty has been proud to partner with the province of Ontario to support older adults in living active, connected, and independent lives,” said Life After Fifty Executive Director Tom Wilson. “This anniversary is both a celebration of our shared history and a reminder of the importance of continued investment in programs that strengthen our communities. We are grateful for this enduring partnership and excited for the work that lies ahead.”

This announcement marks the start of Seniors Month in Ontario, aimed at recognizing seniors’ achievements across the province.

Life After Fifty offers a diverse range of programs intended to keep seniors healthy, active, and involved in their community. These include exercise classes, hobbies, crafts, and social events.

The provincial funding announced on Friday continues from the $17 million funding increase set for 2024, which supported the creation of 100 new SALCs across Ontario.

Currently, there are 416 SALCs across the province.

Life After Fifty can be found on the main floor of the WFCU Centre as well as on Mc Ewan Avenue.
