The Ontario government is putting $171,926 into two energy projects based in Neyaashiinigmiing. These initiatives are aimed at creating local jobs and making energy programs easier to access for First Nations communities.
Provided through the Independent Electricity System Operator’s Indigenous Energy Support Program, this funding backs community-driven efforts that aim to build a stronger, more resilient province. A portion of the funds will go towards hiring a full-time data manager and improving Boodawewin, a web app that helps First Nations users connect with energy efficiency programs. The enhancements will make it easier to use and improve access to essential housing and energy data, which is crucial for tackling energy poverty in these areas.
The rest of the money will support Ishkoday in collaboration with Home Inspectors Group to train 12 to 15 new Indigenous energy auditors. This project focuses on reaching out to students from underrepresented regions of Ontario, opening new job opportunities while giving First Nations households better access to culturally appropriate audit services necessary for joining energy programs. It highlights how important community involvement is for the future of the sector, noting that Indigenous communities have a key part to play in Ontario’s energy scene.
“Indigenous communities have a vital role to play in Ontario’s energy future,” said Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers. “This investment will help empower community members, and ensure Indigenous voices are heard in shaping the energy systems that affect their communities and Ontario as a whole.”
This funding announcement comes as applications officially open for the 2026 intake of the Indigenous Energy Support Program. This provincially managed program allocates funds across four main categories: Capacity Building, Economic Development, Energy Resiliency and Monitoring, along with a new Remote Projects Development stream aimed at helping remote communities transition away from diesel-powered generation.
